New York Congressional District 19
Bard is located in one of the most competitive battleground districts of 2018. According to the Cook Political Report, the race against incumbent Republican Congressman John Faso is a toss-up. The road to taking back the House goes through our own backyard. In the Democratic Primary, six candidates are vying to become the Democratic challenger.
NY19 is the second largest congressional district in New York and one of the most rural. Obama won the district in 2012 with 52% of the vote. Trump won it in 2016 with 50.8%. The District's full electoral history can be found on Ballotpedia.
Congressman John Faso (R)
John Faso is the Republican incumbent. A native of Long Island and a political opportunist, Faso is a lawyer by trade. He served in the New York Assembly from 1987 to 2002. He ran for many high-profile offices in New York State, including Governor, until he finally managed to score a victory against Zephyr Teachout (D) in 2016. The race for NY19 was decided by 24,947 votes.
Faso has been a reliable ally of the Trump agenda:
- In Congress, he has voted in line with Trump's position 85% of the time.
- He voted for the AHCA despite outcry from his constituents.
- He has refused to hold town halls or explain his healthcare vote to his constituents.
- He has said behind closed doors he would have "No problem" defunding Planned Parenthood before walking back this comment when it was made public.
