Our democracy is in crisis, argues Woodstock teacher and Congressional candidate Jeff Beals. For the past forty years, we have allowed corporations and wealthy individuals to amass an inordinate amount of wealth. While we expected this new prosperity to "trickle down," it was instead used to buy off our elected representatives and regulatory agencies. The game was rigged even more in favor of the wealthy and powerful.
Power begets more power; privilege compounds. How does a democratic people create rules to make sure that we don't end up with an oligarchy where the few have all the power? That is the central question of democracy.
